Abstract

This article reconsiders the functional structure of human reason in the age of artificial intelligence. It argues that the growing cognitive capacities of AI systems require more than a technical assessment of performance; they require a philosophical inquiry into what reason is. The article uses ‘functional anatomy’ as a conceptual metaphor for five interconnected but non-reducible dimensions of reason: cognitive, semantic, normative, self-reflexive/existential, and metaphysical. From this perspective, reason is not limited to information processing and problem solving; it also concerns the formation of meaning, the evaluation of ends, the examination of one’s own limits, and orientation toward ultimate questions of being and truth. The article distinguishes functional similarity from ontological identity. Current AI systems can perform sophisticated calculations, pattern recognition, and linguistic tasks, but these achievements do not by themselves demonstrate the possession of meaning, normative autonomy, self-reflexive responsibility, or a relation to transcendence. The argument does not settle what future forms of artificial agency may become capable of; it shows why technical performance alone cannot account for the whole of human reason.
