Book XIV

Abstract

The work of Augustine, one of the  most important theologians and philosophers of the medieval Christian world,  Civitas Dei (City of God), was written  to  reveal  the  position  of  Christianity  against  other  religions  and  schools  of  thought, the Roman Empire’s view of  Christianity, and the solution of many  problems  within  the  framework  of  Christianity. Augustine  influenced  the  philosophers of his time and those who  came after him with the philosophical  perspective he brought to Christianity.  According to Augustine, there are two states: the worldly state and the state of  God. People can only find true happi ness in the state of God and by living according to God. Those who live ac cording  to  man  fall  into  sin  by  being  exposed to the temptations of the devil.  In the book XIV of Civitas Dei that we  translated, Augustine addressed issues  such as the original sin committed by  the first man due to his disobedience,  the fall of the first man, the reason for  sin being the soul and not the body, the  necessity  of  man  to  live  according  to  God,  human  will,  the  relationship  be tween intention and action, lust, nudity,  progeneration and marriage within the  framework of Christianity. He tried to  provide solutions to the problems relat ed to these issues as a theologian and  philosopher.  He  tried  to  establish  the  Christian faith through philosophy. Augustine’s City of God is also important in terms of providing answers to theo logical and philosophical problems.
