A Freudian Analysis of Hegel’s Bondsman-Lord Dialectic in the Context of the Ego-Ideal

When the bondsman-lord dialectic is evaluated in terms of Hegel’s philosophical projection, it represents the beginning of history and civilisation, the ground where self-consciousness becomes green. However, if the dialectical relationship between bondsman and lord is investigated specifically, it appears that bondage and lordship represent two different forms of psychical organisation. This study aims to examine these two different psychical organisations from Freud’s point of view. It is not possible to make a distinction based on desires and impulses to explore the dialectical relationship between bondsman and lord. The difference between bondage and lordship can be explained not by desires and impulses but by the ego-ideal function that negates these desires and impulses. When it comes to the ego ideal, it is necessary to touch on the basic concepts that Freud used and the ego-ideal forms that he determined. Therefore, the subject of this study includes the basic concepts that Freud used to explain the psychic processes, ego-ideal forms, and the analysis of Hegel’s bondsman-lord dialectic from this perspective.
