Sophists
Beyond Good and Evil

In this study, the evaluations regarding the sophists in the history of philosophy will be discussed, with especially taking into consideration the period in which the sophists lived. The source of negative judgments towards the sophists are the testimonies and comments of the Ancient Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle. Although the adoption of negative judgments about the sophists is largely dependent on Plato’s influence in the history of philosophy, we can say that in his time, Plato’s judgments about the sophists were far from being generally accepted. Because the social and political situation in Athens increased the demand for sophists with respect to education. Sophists responded to this demand with an appropriate education. The dominance of negative judgments originating from Plato and Aristotle in the history of philosophy has been questioned in the last few centuries, and moreover, positive judgments about sophists have begun to emerge. In order to understand the sophists and to make sense of their position, it is necessary to go to the beginning of philosophy. In this respect, it will be useful to understand the origin and scope of the word sophist in the Ancient Greek world, through examining the works of the people who were called sophists, to acknowledge and realize a more accurate reception of sophists [...]
