Searching for Traces of Truth in Gorgias’ Texts

Whatever the sophists may have contributed to the development of rhetoric, philosophers viewed them as incompetent intellectuals. With the increasing interest in the Sophists in recent times, their role in the intellectual life of ancient Greece began to be learned. Part of this role included the invention of a concept of logos, which sought to construct arguments that addressed rational thought and political issues. As the actors of the transition from mythos to logos, the Sophists did not only repeat the past, but also started the discussion of this past. Also important to this recovery is an account of the Sophists as epistemologists, who put speech at the center of the project of knowing. It is because of this new understanding that we can speak of the Sophists (as Protagoras, Gorgias) as professionally and intellectually disposed to the practice of philosophy.
