Kierkegaard’s Triangle of Freedom, Anxiety and Sin

This article argues that freedom, anxiety, and sin in Søren Kierkegaard’s philosophy form an integrated framework for understanding human existence before God rather than three independent concepts. Freedom confronts the individual with possibilities, while anxiety reveals the individual’s existential position in relation to them. Sin raises the question of how the possibility of freedom is actualized through individual responsibility and the individual’s relationship with God. To examine this interrelation, the article studies Kierkegaard’s works together and engages with international Kierkegaard scholarship. To clarify Kierkegaard’s originality, it outlines the classical Christian doctrine of sin through Augustine, Aquinas, and Lutheran thought. It argues that Kierkegaard’s engagement with this tradition is neither a straightforward continuation nor a direct break, but a reinterpretation combining continuity and divergence. Kierkegaard reformulates sin, asks whether the aesthete who has not entered the ethical stage can sin, links sin to the individual’s awareness of existing before God, and sets faith, rather than virtue, against sin. Central to this approach is the claim that, although individuals live within historical and social conditions shaped by sin, they remain personally responsible for the actualization of sin. Individuals experience freedom and anxiety under the influence of conditions inherited from previous generations; these conditions, however, do not necessitate sin. For Kierkegaard, sin is a qualitative leap occurring through individual freedom and entailing personal responsibility. This approach thus reinterprets sin through the relationship between freedom, responsibility, and human existence before God.
