Abstract

This article examines Vincent Descombes’s conception of philosophical grammar in relation to the critical function of the philosophy of language. It asks which criteria conceptual analysis employs to assess philosophical claims and what limits constrain that assessment. Through comparative close readings of Descombes’s writings on language, mind, action, and social institutions, the article argues that philosophical grammar tests theoretical generalizations by clarifying concepts’ conditions of use and inferential connections. This grants an analytical priority to the clarification of meaning without turning it into an independent first philosophy that grounds all knowledge. Descombes’s approach therefore cannot be understood as a wholesale rejection of theory. His positive claims concerning the exteriority of mind and the institutional conditions of meaning show that critical analysis has explanatory consequences. The article first considers his objection to identifying natural language with a communication code, then distinguishes analytical priority from ultimate grounding. Analyses of the subject, mental content, and practical judgment illustrate three critical operations: diagnosing conceptual shifts, displaying conditions of use, and testing the scope of generalizations. These operations are compared in terms of the problem, grammatical diagnosis, justification, philosophical outcome, and limits. The final section uses speaking and giving to distinguish common criteria of meaning from agreement in opinion and from a collective mind. The relation to anthropology is understood as reciprocal scrutiny between philosophical analysis and historical and social inquiry. Grammatical analysis derives its force from justified distinctions in particular cases; it cannot by itself replace empirical explanation or normative evaluation.
