The Theory-Ladenness of Observation in Science
From Reichenbach’s Discovery-Justification Distinction to Duhem-Kuhn Critiques

This article systematically examines the problem of whether scientific observations can be independent of theory, situating the discussion within twentieth-century debates in the philosophy of science. The first section analyzes the logical positivist conception of science developed by the Vienna Circle, focusing on the historical and conceptual foundations of the assumption that observations constitute a neutral, theory-free, and universal starting point. Within this framework, Hans Reichenbach’s distinction between the context of discovery and the context of justification is discussed in terms of its central role in constructing the scientific method as a theory-independent system of verification. The second part examines the methodological, epistemological, and historical criticisms that Pierre Duhem, Emile Meyerson, Alexandre Koyré, Karl Popper, and Thomas S. Kuhn made against this view. These thinkers contend that theoretical, historical, and social frameworks inevitably shape observations. The article demonstrates that their criticisms converge on three levels: epistemologically, observations are guided by conceptual presuppositions; historically, scientific development proceeds not cumulatively but through theoretical transformations; and sociologically, scientific practice is structured by communal norms and shared values. In conclusion, it is argued that Reichenbach’s discovery-justification distinction offers a reductionist framework, while the claim that observations are theory-free remains a fundamental epistemological problem for understanding the nature of scientific knowledge.
