The Idea of God in the Context of the Trinity in Hegel

Hegel analyzes God in conformity with both the three stages of the process of dialectic and the belief in the Trinity in Christianity. For Hegel, world history is the history of Geist’s revelation of himself in accordance with the dialectical process. Geist’s dialectical way has permeated every aspect of world history. According to Hegel, philosophy calls absolute substance, idea (Idee) or Geist (spirit), while religion calls it God. Therefore, Hegel’s analysis of the concept of God within the scope of his philosophy of religion is, in a sense, the analysis of Geist. According to this, God has three phases as it is included in both the dialectical laws and the belief in the Trinity. These three stages of God correspond to the three stages in the dialectical process. These three stages are: 1) thesis-in-it-self, 2) the antithesis-for-itself, and 3) the synthesis-in-itself and for itself. The first phase, thesis-in-itself, refers to the abstract state before God created the world. Here, God has not yet attained his own self-consciousness since he has not yet comprehended his actuality. In this first stage, before God created the world, he is an abstract and universal God who can exist only in his infinite consciousness. In the Trinity, this stage refers to God’s own state of abstractness-transcendence before He created Jesus.
