Abstract

This study examines Augustine’s Contra Academicos as a text in which pedagogical, ethical, and epistemological dimensions are intricately interwoven. Reducing any of these dimensions to the others would disrupt the work’s holistic structure. On the pedagogical level, Augustine employs skepticism as a methodological and rhetorical instrument, guiding his students toward dialectical reflection; on the ethical level, he exposes skepticism as a moral malady that drives the human being toward despair and inaction. From an epistemological standpoint, he defends the immunity of tautological, mathematical, dialectical, and presentational truths against doubt, thereby seeking to ground the partial yet genuine reliability of human cognition. Through this synthesis, the ethical and the theoretical domains merge within an educational strategy without establishing the superiority of one over the other. Although Augustine’s critique of skepticism in Contra Academicos may not be entirely satisfactory at the argumentative level, it represents his intellectual struggle against what he perceives as a “philosophy of despair.” Contra Academicos thus transcends a mere debate in epistemology, mediating a renewed connection between the human soul and truth. Consequently, Augustine’s orientation toward truth is not merely epistemological but also soteriological—that is, it emphasizes the salvific power of truth in human life. Within this framework, Contra Academicos functions as a philosophical laboratory in which Augustine refines his understanding of truth.
