After G.W.F. Hegel drew his last breath in 1831, his philosophy did not immediately fade away. On the contrary, great debates over his idealist philosophy broke out immediately after his death. As was the case with Socrates, there occurred a separation among Hegel’s followers and appeared opposed fractions. On the one hand, there was an old generation, who tried to continue Hegel’s philosophy as it was at that time received, namely in a conservative direction, and on the other hand, a younger generation, who desired not only make use of Hegel’s system but also sublate it, became increasingly popular. Admittedly, however, the most interesting and provocative claim concerning Hegel’s philosophy at that time came from Bruno Bauer, who had himself attended to his lectures. In his Trumpet of the Last Judgment against Hegel, the Atheist and the Antichrist: An Ultimatum, which was anonymously published, Bauer contends that, contrary to its appearance of pietism and conservatism of his philosophy, Hegel is an atheist and revolutionary, being “stronger than French” who had adulterized with “the whore of reason”; accordingly, far from justifying the existing religion and state, Hegel is one who consciously undermined them: His philosophy is the revolution itself.
